The Somewhat True History of St. Bernard (Abridged): A Love Story

St. Bernard’s Voices Foundation and Nunez Community College will present Barry Lemoine’s original play, The Somewhat True History of St. Bernard (Abridged): A Love Story at the NCC Auditorium on August 26, 27, 28 and 29.

Tickets are $10 in advanced and $12 at the door and can be purchased at PJ’s Coffeehouse in Chalmette or by calling 504 301 0687.

Lemoine said that the play pays tribute to the colorful characters and events that have shaped the history of the parish.

“To really love a place, you have to know about it,” Lemoine said. “And as the 5th anniversary of Katrina approaches and the disaster in the Gulf continues, I thought it was important to tell a story that celebrates St. Bernard and the place we call home.”

Lemoine, whose past theatre credits include An Evening with Betsy, Voices of Louisiana, and Bless Ya, Boys, will once again mesh history, humor, and heartache to tell this story.
“I worked on this project last year with my theatre students at Chalmette High, and it was amazing to discover how much history there is here. A lot of us know about the Battle of New Orleans, but what about the slaughterhouse at Stockyard Landing or all of the casinos in Old Arabi? I want to bring the history alive in a fun and entertaining way.”

Mary Burns, who was nominated with Lemoine for Big Easy awards for their work in An Evening With Betsy, will head the cast.

“Mary is a gifted and comedic actress and one that the people of St. Bernard really relate with. It is through her eyes that many of the stories, both funny and poignant, will unfold.”

And while Mary Burns will add her unique personality to the show, New York actor Ted McGuiness will return to the parish, starring as our Parish Historian, the true expert of St. Bernard history. McGuiness’ last role in St. Bernard was that of Uncle Sam in Shine Productions’ The Louisiana Pur-Chase, another romp through the pages of history.

McGuiness said that he is excited to return to the parish. “I love the area and the people of St. Bernard so much. And as much as everyone here has gone through these last five years, it really is an honor to be a part of something special like this.”

Joining Burns and McGuiness onstage will be some of Lemoine’s regular collaborators - members of Shine Productions resident acting troupe, Christian Bordelon and Will Schneider.
The show will also include live music performed by Jude Leblanc and a video component created by St. Bernard filmmaker, Jared Serigne.

Lemoine said he welcomes all residents, past and present, to come celebrate St. Bernard.
“We hope to see a lot of our friends and extended families out there as we attempt to sing this love song of our hometown.”

Kick off the Saints season with laughs

If you're ready for some football, or even some goof ball, this year's season of "Bless Ya Boys: A History of the Black and Gold" should help you score both.

Shine Productions has delighted audiences for the past two years with the show, a fast-paced, irreverent program that takes a comedic look at the highs and lows of the history of our beloved New Orleans Saints. But there's a new twist this year.

The play's talented writers and cast members are kicking off the third season with "Bless Ya, Boys: Training Camp," an all-new one-weekend-only special presentation opening Labor Day weekend. The regular show, "Bless Ya Boys: A History of the Black and Gold," will begin in October.

"It's going to be fun to literally kick off the Saints season with laughter," said Christian Bordelon, who co-wrote the script with director Barry Lemoine. "Everyone involved is gifted comedically, and allows us to improv sometime and keep the show fresh."

"Bless Ya, Boys: Training Camp" will run Sept. 4-6 at Le Chat Noir Cabaret, 715 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans. Show times are 8 p.m. on Sept. 4 and 5, and 6 p.m. on Sept. 6.

The regular season of "Bless Ya Boys: A History of the Black and Gold," also at Le Chat Noir Cabaret, will hit the stage Oct. 15-17 and Oct. 22-24. Show times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $26, and include a $5 credit toward drinks. For tickets, call Le Chat Noir Cabaret at 504.581.5812. For more information about Shine Productions, call 504.301.8770 or 504.666.1220 or visit the Web site www.shinepresents.com.

Bordelon, who will portray Saints ownerTom Benson, among other characters, said the training camp shows will cover "everything in our love/hate relationship with the Saints -- from the first days of the Saints until(Sean) PaytonandDrew Brees, leading us to the promised land . . .almost."

The premise of "Bless Ya, Boys: Training Camp," is to show how coaches go through the training camp process just as players do, Bordelon said.

During the show, audience members get an inside look asRita Benson LeBlanc, portrayed byKatherine Karcher Lemoine, arrives at training camp armed with her playbook and videotapes. As LeBlanc immerses herself in Saints history, various humorous vignettes transpire with actors portrayingBum Phillips,Mike Ditka,Jim Mora,Kenny StablerandArchie Manning, who are joined together in an "All in the Family" sort of way. The show also will feature a special appearance by the leader of the Sinsations, the Bless Ya Boys mock dance team.

"After watching this show, you'll have a Ph.D. in owning an NFL franchise," Bordelon said.

"Bless Ya Boys: A History of the Black and Gold," takes place in heaven -- where instead of your life flashing in front of your eyes they flash the history and heartache of our beloved black and gold. From Mecom to Mora, all the way to Payton and Brees, they introduce you to many of the characters that are all part of Saints lore.

Karcher Lemoine said she's excited to be joining the cast. "What I like about the show is that it is all new, it's fast and fresh, but it still gives a more comprehensive look at the individuals who have shaped the history of the franchise," she said. "But the main thing about the cast is that we are all real fans. We love the Saints and try to keep the show upbeat and current."

In addition to Bordelon and the Lemoines, other cast members includeWill Schneider,Ron BlanchardandWes Cannon.Rose Marie Sandis the producer.

Audience reaction to "The Altos"

June 25 2008

Below is an excerpt from a letter sent by fellow Otmacer Pete Schulz who joined
the mob family this weekend.

Wow, what a night!! My family and I haven't laughed and smiled as much as
we did last weekend at "Rocky & Carlo's".
The cast is nothing short of spectacular, the play is well written, and very
funny I'm not sure who was having more fun between the cast and the
audience. If you're a fan of the "Sopranos" you'll really
enjoy the play on words that is employed in most of the dialog, if you're
not familiar with the "sopranos" you'll still enjoy all of the
local references. This is the best deal going for a meal, a show, and an
entertaining cultural experience all for only $40.00 thanks again!!"
